Health System Innovation Institutes: Thinking (and Working) Outside of the Box

While the Affordable Care Act certainly remains controversial, some provisions – including the creation of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation – receive mostly positive reviews from both sides of the political spectrum. The Innovation Center is charged with identifying and testing innovative payment and service-delivery models designed to reduce costs and improve quality, such as bundled payments and shared savings. Created to operate outside the rigid, rules-oriented CMS culture, the Innovation Center can explore new models that otherwise would be choked off by government bureaucracy.
