Ed co-founded PYA, a highly trusted advisory firm for the business community, in 1983, and he continues to serve as the Firm’s Chief Executive Officer. Under his leadership, PYA has grown from a start-up with three employees to its position today as one of the leading accounting and consulting firms in the United States. In addition to founding six successful affiliated companies, PYA has offices in Atlanta, Knoxville, Nashville, Kansas City, and Tampa.
Under Ed’s leadership, PYA has achieved national recognition, most recently ranked as the Modern Healthcare 15th largest Healthcare Consulting Firm, INSIDE Public Accounting 3rd Highest Percentage Female Ownership Among Top 100 Firms, an INSIDE Public Accounting Top 100 Firm, and First ALTA Elite Provider of Best Practices Assessments for the title industry. PYA also was featured in Accounting Today’s “Inside the Top 100—In-Depth Looks at Four of the Most Successful Firms in the Country.”

With over 40 years of consulting and advisory leadership experience, Ed has vast expertise in successfully addressing complex issues in healthcare and business. His entrepreneurial spirit and acumen for financial and business matters has led the Firm in providing a full range of consulting services related to regulatory compliance, mergers and acquisitions, governance, business valuations and fair market value assessments, multi-unit business and clinical integrations, best practices, tax and assurance, as well as business analysis and operations optimization. Ed has served as an expert witness on healthcare industry matters and in several Certificate of Need (CON) appeals, and represented healthcare organizations before regulatory agencies such as CMS; the IRS; and state departments of mental health, insurance, and Medicaid.
Two years after graduating from the University of Tennessee and joining Ernst & Ernst (E&Y today), Ed was one of 18 professionals from the United States and Great Britain selected to participate in the first Ernst & Ernst Accelerated Healthcare Program, a one-year, full-time education and work-study program in healthcare industry matters established by the Chairman of Ernst. He is a member of several national organizations, including the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Health Care Financial Management Association, and the American Health Lawyers Association. Ed is also active on a state and regional level, where, among other efforts, he serves as a representative of Governor Bill Haslam’s Tennessee Task Force on Health & Wellness. A recent inductee to the East Tennessee Business Hall of Fame, Ed also has been recognized for his accomplishments by the Knoxville Business Journal as the third individual selected to receive the Healthcare Heroes Lifetime Achievement Award.
