Thought Leadership on Concierge Medicine, Medical Director Assessment

PYA’s thought leadership is featured in two spring publications from the American Association of Provider Compensation Professionals (AAPCP). The AAPCP is the largest nonprofit organization in the country devoted to provider compensation, contracting, and alignment.

In the organization’s preeminent publication, the Journal of Provider Compensation, PYA Principal Angie Caldwell, Senior Manager Derek Long, and Senior Director, Provider Compensation, Essentia Health David Kruse share insights about concierge medicine in their article, “At Your Service: Concierge Medicine Programs.” The authors show how concierge medicine can lessen the challenges of physician burnout, access to care, and reimbursement stability and share tips on implementing a program that balances the desired benefits with the potential risks.

In the article, Caldwell, Long, and Kruse help healthcare leaders calculate the concierge medicine subscription fee and appropriate physician compensation. They recommend conducting a market assessment, identifying the mix of services and level of access, and determining the panel size for each physician. The authors also provide advice for assessing and structuring fair market value compensation and offer metrics for assessment.

The annual Journal of Provider Compensation provides in-depth analysis of issues related to provider compensation and contracting strategy, design, compliance, and legal issues. Journal articles undergo a rigorous acceptance process and robust peer review by members of the AAPCP editorial board.

In the April issue of AAPCP Monthly, PYA Principals Tynan Kugler, Lyle Oelrich, and Zachary Doolin presented a new PYA resource, the Medical Director Need and Valuation Assessment Checklist. The checklist helps healthcare organizations assess the need for a medical director and ensure fair market value compensation for the role.

“By defining the business purpose, outlining specific duties, and carefully considering role requirements, healthcare organizations can evaluate medical directorships to drive quality, compliance, and strategic success,” the authors write.
