PYA Executives Publish in Respected Peer-Reviewed Journal

A white paper authored by three PYA executives was published in the 2023 issue of the Journal of Provider Compensation, the preeminent journal published by the American Association of Provider Compensation Professionals (AAPCP). The paper, “Giving Credit Where Credit is Due: Compensation Issues Arising from Physician-APP Collaboration,” was written by Angie Caldwell, Consulting Principal and Office Managing Principal, Tampa; Lyle Oelrich, Principal, Knoxville; and Kelsey Kindel, Manager, Knoxville.

The journal provides in-depth analysis of issues related to “provider compensation and contracting strategy, design, compliance, and legal issues, including concepts of fair market value and commercial reasonableness,” according to its website. It is published annually, and articles undergo a rigorous acceptance process and robust peer review by members of the AAPCP editorial board.

In the white paper, Caldwell, Oelrich, and Kindel pose the critical question: “…under a physician productivity-based compensation model, how should one account for services furnished under a collaborative physician-APP practice arrangement?” They offer three helpful methods to properly account for the services:

  1. APP reduction
  2. Physician wRVU reduction
  3. Physician wRVU reduction with or without supervisory stipend

The full white paper is available in the AAPCP journal and by viewing the PDF.
