PYA Presents on Compliance in Hospital-Physician Transactions, Delves Into Data Blocking Rule

PYA thought leaders presented at the Spring Conference for the Montana Chapter of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) and the Montana Health Information Management Association (MHIMA).

PYA Principal Carol Carden and Senior Manager Traci Waugh presented “10 Common Healthcare Compliance Concerns Regarding Hospital/Physician Transactions.” They discussed particular areas of risk in some common healthcare transactions. Carol and Traci also shared examples of problematic arrangements we have encountered working with organizations recovering from governmental and qui tam investigations. During this presentation, attendees:

  • Became attuned to identify areas of compliance risk in hospital-physician transactions.
  • Heard practical takeaways as solutions for problematic arrangements.
  • Learned best practices to prevent problematic arrangements.

PYA IT Advisory Manager Colby Terry and Staff Consultant Erin Walker presented “21st Century Cures Act and a Deep Dive Into the Data Blocking Rule.” They explored what information blocking is, as well as reviewed the associated requirements, exceptions, reporting procedures, and penalties for noncompliance. This presentation covered:

  • What the timeline is for complying with the information blocking requirements.
  • What situations create an exception to adhering to the information blocking requirements.
  • How information blocking claims are investigated and the penalties associated with non-compliance.
