As CEO of PYA, Marty is the steward of an INSIDE Public Accounting Best of the Best Firm. He left a “Big 8” firm to join PYA in 1991 and has since helped PYA evolve to gain national recognition including being named by Accounting Today as “one of the most successful firms in the country” and rankings by Modern Healthcare as a Top 20 healthcare consulting firm for 17 years.
Marty’s leadership experience spans almost four decades and many industries and organizations from start-ups to Fortune 100 companies. His entrepreneurial thinking manifests in PYA initiatives, including the annual PYA Ballard Innovation Award–the largest of its kind in East Tennessee.
Marty earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with honors from the University of Tennessee. He serves as a founding partner and executive committee member for PYA startups, including Realty Trust Group and PYA Waltman. He also is co-founder and general partner of Market Square Ventures and serves in several leadership roles at the Knoxville Chamber. Marty is involved with the American Health Law Association, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants. He serves on the Accounting and Information Management Advisory Roundtable at the University of Tennessee Haslam College of Business and the Investment Advisory Committee of the UT Research Foundation. He received two Instructor Excellence Awards when at KPMG (1985-1991). Forbes named Marty one of America’s Top 200 CPAs in 2024 and Best-in-State CPAs in 2025 in its inaugural lists. In 2025, Marty was named as CPA of the Year by the Tennessee Society of CPAs.
