PYA Presented on No Surprises Act and Post-Pandemic Telehealth at MHA Health Summit

PYA Principal Martie Ross and Senior Manager Kathy Reep presented at the 2022 Montana Hospital Association (MHA) Health Summit.

Kathy presented “No More Surprises: No Surprises Act and Good Faith Estimates.” In 2021, regulations related to the implementation of the No Surprises Act were issued to eliminate the practice of “balance billing” patients. They also required the provision of good faith estimates to all self-pay patients, with an effective date of January 2022. Hospitals and physicians are struggling to implement these rules, and yet, more regulations are expected by early summer, with a 2023 compliance deadline. This session:

  • Focused on the regulation requirements.
  • Explained the dispute resolution process.
  • Offered best practices for delivering to patients the required notifications related to both balance billing rules and the provision of good faith estimates.
  • Discussed additional implementing regulations for this year.

Martie presented “Post-Pandemic Telehealth and Virtual Services.” After the COVID-19 public health emergency ends, the rules relating to telehealth and virtual services will—for the most part—revert to limited pre-pandemic coverage. This session will summarize the changes ahead and highlight how providers should re-think their virtual strategies going forward. The discussion focused on:

  • Benefits to patients.
  • Reimbursement opportunities.
  • Staffing and technology needs.

The MHA Health Summit took place in person from April 6-8, 2022, in Butte, Montana.
