PYA Article in National Journal Addresses Compliance Investigation

An article written by PYA Principal and Chief Compliance Officer Shannon Sumner and Project Coordinator Emily Grover was featured in a recent issue of the Journal of Health Care Compliance. The national bimonthly publication provides current and emerging trends and issues related to healthcare compliance.

Sumner and Grover’s article, “The Investigation Process—A Key Element in Your Compliance Toolkit,” is part of a column in the journal dedicated to PYA thought leadership. It presents a compelling case for the need for a comprehensive compliance investigation process to respond to U.S. Dept. of Justice (DOJ) expectations.

In their article, Sumner and Grover state,

“Should the DOJ determine that charges are necessary, a robust investigation process, planned and enacted throughout the life of the Compliance Program, could mitigate penalties and assist with the negotiation of settlements.”

The authors provide a thorough examination of the design of the investigation process. Although each organization’s process will vary, they suggest all processes should address key considerations to strengthen the overall compliance program. When creating an investigation process, organizations should identify key decision-makers, determine the logistics of collecting and providing data, assess proper communication methods, devise relevant disciplinary actions, and many more important considerations.

The Journal of Health Care Compliance is published by Wolters Kluwer. Sumner and Grover’s article is in the September-October 2023 issue, which is available to subscribers of the journal.
