PYA Principal Tynan Kugler and Consulting Manager Katie Garmon spoke at the 41st Annual Conference for the Association of Healthcare Internal Auditors (AHIA). Their presentation, “A Look Under the Hood: Keys to a Medical Practice Audit,” detailed how auditors must proficiently design an audit approach and prioritize the focus to ensure an effective tune-up of key medical practice activities.
Medical practices and employed physician networks offer new points of access for hospitals and health systems and present opportunities for increased patient and community provider engagement. Medical practices have also had an increasing role in the patient care continuum as a result of mergers and acquisitions with larger healthcare organizations and other affiliation activities.
The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to impact medical practices as they manage risks, often with limited resources. For physician enterprises to continue operating efficiently, audits are imperative. Audits can reveal opportunities, but may also show areas where organizations are in non-compliance. This session:
- Underscored the necessity of medical practice audits and implications including the identification of key risk areas.
- Reviewed and aided in the selection of the appropriate audit type and scope to accomplish identified goals.
- Assisted with preparedness for a medical practice audit and creation of a guide for reviewing key functional areas.
- Helped with the development of on-site strategy, identification of operational and compliance findings, and prioritization of action items.
