In an article published by the American Association of Provider Compensation Professionals (AAPCP), PYA Principals Angie Caldwell and Derek Long examine the unique workforce and compensation challenges hospitals face in recruiting and retaining obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) physicians and offer strategies to address them.
In the article, “Navigating Challenges for Hospitals in OB/GYN Physician Workforce and Compensation,” the authors explain that as the supply of OB/GYN physicians is expected to decline, the demand for their services increases. At the same time, OB hospitalists (laborists) are becoming more prevalent, intensifying the competition for OB/GYN physicians.
Caldwell and Long discuss a critical workforce challenge that occurs when OB/GYN physicians do not wish to participate in call coverage for unassigned and often uninsured patients and discuss a strategic solution through the use of laborist programs.
Challenges with compensation include the complexity of determining fair market value for OB/GYN physician compensation and the difficulties arising from compensating the physicians based on wRVU productivity. Caldwell and Long describe an approach to align global obstetric wRVUs among providers.
The article was published in the August issue of AAPCP Monthly, where it is available to AAPCP members and subscribers.
