Shannon Sumner, Principal and PYA Chief Compliance Officer, is a featured presenter in the July 16 Let’s Talk Compliance podcast, “The Risks and Pitfalls of Health Care Supply Chain Compliance.” The episode is part of the Let’s Talk Compliance partnership between PYA and Foley & Lardner.
Sumner is joined by Monica Chmielewski, Vice Chair of Foley’s Health Care Practice Group, to explore supply chain compliance from the perspective of providers and healthcare manufacturers and vendors and share the risks and penalties related to noncompliance. Angie Caldwell, PYA Principal, co-hosts the episode with Jana Kolarik, a Partner in Foley’s Health Care Practice Group.
A third-party risk management program, Sumner says, extends beyond traditional vendor assessments. It must encompass a “holistic approach that incorporates governance, risk management, compliance, and legal across [the] entire life cycle of third-party relationships.”
Chmielewski adds, “…a hurdle of compliance is speed.” She and Sumner advise healthcare organizations to have comprehensive third-party risk management programs as part of their compliance programs that enable efficient risk assessment and vetting of not only outsourced or offshore contractors and subcontractors but also other providers.
The risk management program should begin with an inventory of current third-party relationships, the right governance committee, and vendor due diligence, contracting, and onboarding processes and extend through oversight of the vendor relationship, Sumner says. Without a thorough program, the organization faces potential criminal and monetary penalties and potential harm to patients and the organization’s reputation.
