PYA Forensic and Valuation Experts Led Several Training Programs at Industry Conference

From panels to presentations and workshops, PYA’s forensic and valuation experts engaged attendees at the AICPA Forensic and Valuation Services Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, Nov. 13-15, 2017.

PYA Principal Shannon Farr conducted a session, “Expert Witness Testimony in Family Law: Real Life Pitfalls, and How to Avoid Them.”

Learning objectives for that session included:

  • Avoid the snare—deposition tips and techniques.
  • Guard your opinion—trial scripting for direct testimony.
  • Prepare for the hazards—cross-examination.
  • Step on a landmine?—recovering via re-direct.

Shannon also assisted with a pre-conference workshop, a part of the NextGen FVS Professionals Program, for attendees with fewer than five years’ forensic or valuation experience. It offered hands-on exploration of core competencies to learn concept applications and methodologies in actual practice.

Principals Carol Carden and Jim Lloyd served on a healthcare valuation panel addressing key topics within the healthcare industry: current developments and issues relating to valuing healthcare entities, arrangements, and compensation arrangements, as well as the latest trends in physician practice and ancillary service provider valuations, and the role private equity is currently playing.

Carol additionally served on a diversity and inclusion panel addressing:

  • Reviewing historical statistics.
  • Level-setting the definitions of “diversity & inclusion.”
  • Understanding challenges based on gender, age, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Discussing the concept of unconscious bias.
  • Learning ways different firms incorporate diversity and inclusion.

Finally, Jim joined PYA’s Annapoorani Bhat for a “Fair Value Analysis of Healthcare Entities,” where attendees learned:

  • The specific nuances of performing fair value analyses for transactions involving for-profit and not-for-profit health systems and certain other healthcare entities.
  • How to identify the specific needs of the engagement as it relates to the engagement.
  • How to value tangible and intangible assets, and the support they need from clients and auditors to ensure a quality work product.
