ICD-10 Implementation – Hurry up and Wait…

While the implementation of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS (“ICD-10”) for October 1, 2013, has been delayed, the American Health Information Management Association (“AHIMA”) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (“CMS”) encourage healthcare professionals to “stay the course” in their transition planning. The delay provides healthcare organizations additional time to truly assess the impact of the ICD-10 implementation.

Organizations must think beyond the walls of their facilities to incorporate vendors and third-party payors. Becoming ICD-10 ready is a collaborative process among all impacted parties. Significant planning, preparation, and training must be accomplished to yield a successful ICD-10 implementation. Organizations are encouraged to use this additional preparation time to thoroughly assess their ICD-10 readiness.
