Deadline Approaches for Hospital Electronic Health Record Incentive Program

The last day for eligible hospitals and critical access hospitals to begin their 90-day reporting period to demonstrate “meaningful use” of electronic health record (EHR) technology and receive the maximum Medicare incentive payments is Wednesday, July 3, 2013.  Eligible providers must report on the following areas:

  • Core objectives (14 of 14)
  • Menu objectives (5 of 10), one of which must be a public health measure
  • Clinical quality measures (15 of 15)

Hospitals have until November 30 to register and attest to the above “meaningful use” measures to receive incentive payments for Federal fiscal year 2013.  The attestation user guide  offers step-by-step instructions to complete the EHR attestation process.  Following successful registration and attestation, providers will receive a preliminary incentive payment with the final payment calculated based on the facility’s settled Medicare cost report.  The EHR incentive payment includes a base amount of $2 million,  plus an additional $200 for each acute care hospital discharge between 1,150 and 23,000.
This amount is then multiplied by a provider’s Medicare share and applicable transition factor.
