Bundled Payment Initiative Updates

The Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation (“Innovation Center”) began releasing Limited Data Sets (“LDS”) today. Organizations that submitted a letter of intent for participation in the Bundled Payment for Care Improvement pilot program should receive a message from the Innovation Center regarding the delivery status of their LDS soon.

The LDS files will allow organizations to analyze claims data in order to develop episodes of care models and estimate the financial impact of bundled payments. LDS files will provide recipients the information necessary to track individual treatments across various providers and years, thus facilitating a greater understanding of opportunities for care improvement and cost reduction throughout the care continuum.

Additionally, the Innovation Center announced this week they are delaying the deadline for the applications of Bundled Payment Initiative Models Two, Three and Four to May 16, 2012.  According to the Innovation Center, the new deadline is the result of delays in the development of the online application portal to be used for the collection of program applications.

Despite this delay in the application deadline, many organizations have expressed concern about the ability to process this data in a timely manner.  Further, interested organizations will also be faced with the challenge of quickly using the results of the data to establish economic and other parameters for participation in order to complete their applications prior to the deadline.

If you have questions about your organization’s ability or approach to processing this data, PYA is available to assist you in gaining an understanding of the data included in the LDS files, and in determining how to efficiently utilize the data to assess the financial and operational impact of a bundled payment model.
