October 1, 2006 Brings Over 200 New ICD-9-CM Diagnosis Codes

(PYA Alert dated May 16, 2006)

New, revised and deleted ICD-9-CM diagnosis codes have been released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Among the new codes, you will find more detailed hypertensive chronic kidney and heart/chronic kidney disease codes.

The list of new codes includes:

  • Eleven new codes for various types of pain
  • Thirty-three new codes for pregnancy complications
  • Six new codes for unspecified adverse effects of drug, anesthesia, insulin and other substances

There is no grace period to begin using the new ICD-9-CM codes and you are required to begin using them on October 1, 2006. Providers should link the most specific diagnosis code to support the reason for services. Carriers may deny submitted claims based on incorrect, non-specific or deleted diagnosis codes. Now is the time to prepare the necessary revisions to your patient superbills (charge tickets) for immediate use on October 1, 2006.

The codes are listed in Tables 6A, 6C and 6E starting on page 840.
